Martin Hawver is the editor and publisher of Hawver’s Capitol Report, the respected, non-partisan news service that reports on Kansas government and politics.

Hawver is the dean of the Kansas Statehouse press corps, having covered the beat longer than any other current Statehouse reporters.

Hawver attended Washburn University of Topeka where he was editor of the Review, the student newspaper. Hawver worked for the Topeka Capital-Journal for 25 years, starting as a copyboy in high school, then working as a reporter and weekend city editor and finally covering the Kansas Statehouse for the newspaper for 17 years. In May 1993, he left the newspaper to become co-owner of Hawver News Company, a business started two years earlier by his wife, Vickie Griffith Hawver, a former Capital-Journal reporter and editor.

The company began publishing Hawver’s Capitol Report in June 1993. That formerly printed newsletter has grown into an electronic news service, providing subscribers with Hawver’s Capitol Report, a newsletter e-mailed weekly during the legislative session and about twice a month the rest of the year, and Hawver’s Capitol Flash, a breaking-news bulletin e-mailed as news warrants.

Hawver has covered 30 Kansas legislative sessions and 10 national Republican and Democratic political conventions, plus countless statewide and local political conventions. He spends most of his time in the Kansas Statehouse—including quality time at the 3rd floor Rail where newsmakers and political insiders congregate—to gather information for HCR’s articles, breaking-news stories, analyses, and the popular and humorous "Capitol Rail" column.

Hawver also writes a weekly column called "At The Rail" that is syndicated to Kansas newspapers, is a speaker for conventions and seminars, and is frequently interviewed by television and radio stations to give insights on state government and politics.
His often-stated philosophy is that covering politics is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

What drama! A new Legislature lands in Topeka in January 2007. You and your organization deserve the inside scoop on the complicated issues, management crises, personality clashes, gossip and behind-the-scenes action at the biggest game in the state–the Legislature. Who you gonna call? Martin Hawver, who is behind the scenes, on the floors of the House and Senate and, of course, at the Rail, and who turns out to be an entertaining, informative and pretty well-known public speaker. Check out Speaker Availability and get Hawver booked for your organization!
